App Brainstorming

Concepts/ideas to consider/remember (from Cooper)

  • The number one goal of computer uses is to not feel stupid. There is nothing I’ve seen to suggest that smart phone users are any different.
  • We’ll accept complexity if it is predictable and intuitive (ie, learnable)
  • Goals are the reason we perform tasks; a goal is an end condition and a task is a step along the way to completing the goal.

Process

  • Working in twos (A, B, C, D), discuss your six proposals. Identify strengths, weaknesses that your partner may not have thought of. Where will you get your data? What goal does the app help the user achieve? Rank the six proposals.
  • Working in fours (AB, CD), discuss the top three proposals from each group. Identify strengths, weaknesses that the prior group may not have thought of. Where will you get your data? What goal does the app help the user achieve? Rank the six proposals.
  • Change the format of the fours (AC, BD); discuss the top three proposals from each group. Identify strengths, weaknesses that the prior group may not have thought of. Where will you get your data? Rank the six proposals.

I’ll keep a running matrix to show what apps are “winning” the brainstorming weeding.

Regularly scheduled assignments:

Project assignment

  • Course blog : Take your top ranking application* and develop a draft application precis : rationale, audience, competing products. Show us that you have read and thought about the iPhone human interface guidelines. Where are the points of cognitive friction in competing products — places where you can secure an advantage for your product? For most of you, this post should be far more detailed that the post you made for 19 July. Look at the UGA student project for inspiration.
    * In the case of a tie (you have two apps with the same love from the class), you and I will work together to pick one.
